I am officially stepping down as the Arrow in the Head theatrical/new-releases reviewer!

February 4th, 2017 No comments

I founded Arrow in the Head in the year 2000 (this was my first review…lol), alongside my hombre JoBlo aka Berge Garabedian (thanks again for the opportunity man), when I was a young horror-loving punk and when the internet was still the Wild West. I did everything myself on the site till about 2005 when it got so big that we had to hire a staff to back me up. Up until now, I was the main “reviewer” on the site. On that, I did miss a lot of horror films last year for varied reasons, which brings me to this article: after 16 years, I am stepping down as the main theatrical/new-releases reviewer for AITH.

Although I do have mix feelings about it (it will be kind of odd and maybe refreshing to see new flicks and not HAVE TO write about them afterwards) I decided that this was the right time to do it. Throughout the years, I have balanced working on the site while pursuing my cinematic aspirations (I have been screenwriting or/and acting in films like 100 FEET, DEAD SHADOWS or AMERICAN MUSCLE). But it’s having directed my first feature THE SHELTER (coming to Redbox on February 7 BTW), which prompted me to call it a day.  I completely fell in love with the process, it invigorated me, and am now focusing my energies further on that career path. And to be honest with ya, since last year, reviewing new releases, just didn’t feel “right” anymore. When it doesn’t feel right – it’s time to call it quits.

With Derek Mears (Jason Voorhees), Nick Principe (Chromeskull) and R.A. Mihailoff (Leatherface)!

On that, I will always be on the site behind the scenes, and in the name of keeping my voice on it, I have decided to still give out my two cents and chump change on the occasional old movie (like I recently did here). Why? To educate younger readers about cinema and maybe bring attention to fine films that some of you may have overlooked. I also may start a column down the road, I have a nifty idea (yes, it is nifty), we’ll see. And of course, when I get my next feature off the ground (I got 5 that are being looked at right now, one will set-up sooner or later), AITH will be ground zero for me to share my (mis) adventures in filmmaking.

In closing, I would like to thank all of you who have supported my ramblings on AITH for all them years – I’ve felt lots of love over time and enjoyed interacting with many of you, debating what we all worship: GENRE CINEMA.  I also want to thank the haters who were key in my evolution too, as they taught me how to handle fair/harsh/unfair criticism. A key trait to have in this biz. Ya know, I still get the random e-mail from folks saying that they “grew up with me”, or “went into the film biz because of me” or that they fell in love with horror because of my keyboard drivel. Shit, I’ve even had high profile filmmakers re-cut their films after reading my early Fest reviews. Kind of nuts when I stop and think about it. So yeah, I think in terms of this field – one that I undertook by accident (creating/running a site and reviewing films were never goals of mine, they just happened) – you can’t get any better than that. Now time to conquer other mountains! Thanks again for all the support and the positive energy over the years. Back at ya mofos and mofettes!

Michael Paré talks the Horror in The Shelter! My thoughts on Cannes screening!

May 11th, 2015 No comments

cannes-banner-1

In anticipation for  THE SHELTER Cannes Screening on May 16 ( 4:00PM in the GRAY 3 THEATRE) here is an excerpt (from a longer interview which should be on the Blu-Ray when released) of star Michael Paré (Thomas) talking about the “type” of film The Shelter is. Scroll down at the end o this Post to watch it!

Will I be at the screening myself? To be honest, I was on the fence in terms of attending the Festival or not. On one end, I want to be there for my film and would love to see all of my friends from around the world and make new ones as I always do. On the other end, I’m an independent filmmaker; Cannes is mucho pricey and there is still a very long road ahead for The Shelter – one that I have to prep for financially. So I kept going back and forth. Recently, a new film opportunity arose and it made the decision for me.

The final outcome is: I will not be going to Cannes but I will be working on a new film project shortly one that will enrich me and give me further experience. Sometimes when you can’t make a choice – life does it for you! I said “sometimes”… I’m usually not one for waiting :) On that, THE SHELTER screens in 5 days (man that’s soon) on May 16 at 4:00PM at the Gray 3 theatre and is represented by DC MEDIAS. Contact them here! The Shelter wants a home!

Hey all, am happy to report that BILLY TRIGGER has finally entered Post Production. BILLY TRIGGER was directed by Christian Viel and Produced by JoBlo Productions and here’s a reminder as to what it is about:

And for good reasons; he is cold, calculated and relentless and has never tackled a job he couldn’t finish. His life is trouble-free and solitary as it mainly consists of: loose women, doing the work and cashing in. That’s until Pops, the head of the organization, hands him his next assignment.Trigger is tasked to look over his young mistress, Catherine (Pia Metni), while he’s away on business. Of course, nothing goes as planned and Trigger ends up on the wrong side of Pops esteem…What happens when the best in the business is pitted against the business? Place your bets!

BILLY TRIGGER stars Fred Williamson, Pia Metni, Matthew Bennett, Meghan Gabruch, Anderson Bradshaw, Deke Richards and myself. It was financed by JoBlo Productions. Check it on THE INTERNET MOVIE DATABASE HERE

JoBlo.com finances its first full-length feature film ‘Billy Trigger’

The action film will be directed by Christian Viel (Deaden) and stars Fred Williamson (From Dusk Till Dawn), John Fallon (Saw 2), Matthew Bennett (Battlestar Galactica) and Pia Metni (Mirror, Mirror) (Montreal, Canada) September 18, 2012 – Popular movie fansite JoBlo.com will be financing its first full feature called ‘Billy Trigger’ written by John Fallon and to be directed by Christian Viel. Principal photography on the film will begin in mid-October, with JCB Productions and Movie Seals Productions, which is a return to the genre for Viel and Fallon, who made Deaden together in 2006.

Iconic American actor Fred Williamson will play ‘Pops’ in the film, the leader of an Irish mob which employs Billy Trigger, the hitman played by John Fallon, who is also co-producing the film. Joining them are Matthew Bennett playing ‘Bruno’ the expert assassin, as well as Pia Metni who will portray ‘Catherine’, the lead actress and love interest in the film.

Official synopsis: Irish mobster Billy Trigger has been the O’Brien family’s number one enforcer for three years now. And for good reason: he is cold, calculating and relentless and has never tackled a job he couldn’t finish. His life is trouble-free and solitary and consists mainly of three things: loose women, doing the work and cashing in. That’s until Pops, the head of the organization, hands him his next assignment. Trigger is tasked to look over Pops’ young mistress, Catherine, while he’s away. Of course, nothing goes as planned and Trigger ends up on the wrong side of Pops’ esteem… What happens when the best in the business is pitted against the business? Place your bets!

This will be the 5th cinematic collaboration between Viel and Fallon, who had previously worked together on Deaden, Recon 2020, Recon 2022: The Mezzo Incident and Recon 2023: The Gauda Prime Conspiracy. Most recently, Viel is the creative mind behind the very popular online comic book web series “Heroes of the North”, while Fallon has written and starred in American Muscle, and starred in the French horror film Dead Shadows.

I’m a cartoon again! JoBlo’s Zen launches on FunnyOrDie.com!

August 15th, 2011 No comments

JoBlo.com is launching a new “animated short” series today and it’s called JOBLO’S ZEN. The cartoon focuses on the lives of JoBlo and The Arrow (yours truly) characters and the wacky situations they find themselves in. The series will come to life on JoBlo’s FunnyOrDie.com channel every 3/4 weeks or so. So if you dig them, please vote for us and share the episodes with your friends, family and pets.

JoBlo had this to say about the Pilot Episode: Our pilot episode below is more of an intro to the two characters in their familiar habitat (JoBlo’s den basement) but later episodes will feature more interaction with the boys, people around them, as well as plenty of adventures at Comic Con, strip joints, movie theaters and plenty of other funky places where mayhem can be interpreted.

Here’s the official byline of the show: “JoBlo and the Arrow are two dudes who enjoy smoking some good weed, drinking some good drinks, as well as watching movies and playing videogames. Basically, they’re your every day movie geek but with a Canadian twist and an extra helping of hot chicks.”

JoBlo & The Arrow cartoon short, coming soon!

June 19th, 2011 No comments

JoBlo.com mastermind Berge Garabedian has concocted a cartoon short with some input from yours truly (and I stress the word some, this is Berge’s brain-child, not mine). The short will focus on the adventures of JoBlo (Berge’s alter ego on JoBlo.com) and The Arrow (my alter ego on Arrowinthehead.com) and will somewhat be based on our real lives. I said “somewhat” :) Peep a preview of a frame above and do keep in mind that I may wind up looking like a white guy in the final product as opposed to a Latino :)
