I’ll speak for myself here; with its long takes/classical directing style and old school cinematography (by the great Ken Kelsch); ERIC RED’s 100 FEETstarring Famke Janssen, Ed Westwick, Bobby Cannavale and yours truly as Jimmy was always meant to be a big screen experience. Alas, the movie was finished when the film market collapsed and distribution as we knew it went tits up, hence it wound up straight to TV then DVD.
On that I am elated to report that Writer/Director and my compadre ERIC RED will be hosting a double bill 35MM screening of 100 FEET (and his classic BODY PARTS) at Alamo Drafthouse in Denver, Colorado on Thursday October 27th 2016 (GET THE INFO AND TICKETS HERE)! So many of you will get the opportunity to witness it on the big screen, the way it was meant to be seen in the first place.
I look back at 100 FEET with much fondness as it was a first for me on many levels.
1- I played against type (nervous/insecure tech dude)
2- Finally got to be in an Eric Red film, which was along term goal of mine.
3- I acted alongside two acting powerhouses (Janssen and Cannavale). My cherry got popped!
4- I had to deliver an “exposition laced” quasi monologue (I basically set up the rules of the movie) and make it sound “organic”. Never had to that before (or since). To this day I remember my lines 🙂
5- Learned so much watching Eric Red at work. I’m a better director today for it.
It was also on that set that I met Michael Pare (who wound up being the lead in my directorial debut The Shelter), visited Eastern Europe for the first time (the flick was shot in Budapest) and also learned the hard way that downing a Coca Cola is not the best thing to do right before acting in a scene (duh) being that one needs to be relaxed to act, Coke did not “relax” me…lol!

I’m so happy that THE SHELTER will screen there, my only regret is that I won’t be there to support the screening in person (I made a prior commitment the Southern Screen Film Festival – the film will play there too) and hang with all the fine folks at the Festival. On that, I do have a message for the ANOH crowd:
“The Shelter is a moody, trippy and introspective film, hence set those gore and bouncing melons expectations aside. As opposed to what I have done in the past, this is not that kind of movie.Don’t go in there expecting a party, think more the mood of a funeral… :)”
The SITGES FILM FESTIVAL screening of THE SHELTER has come and gone and here are my quick thoughts on how it went down. When I presented the film I said: “You know me for films with tits and gore” and the crowd went wild and then I said “Well, this isn’t one of those” and the crowd groaned. This was the first day of the Fest, the audience wanted to party and if there’s one thing THE SHELTER is NOT is a party movie. With that aside; the crowd didn’t boo (those trustee whistles) which I saw as a positive thing and they all clapped at a certain point which at least told me they were involved in the happenings.
PPS: When the flick finally rolled, I did a double take. The image didn’t look too good with the colors being all over the place. Not sure if it was my DCP, the projector or a bit of both, but the film never looked this bad on a big screen. I am still in Spain now, but when I get home, I will get to the bottom of things as I NEVER want the movie to look like that on a big screen again.
Post screening, I corresponded in person with folks at the Fest and online with people who enjoyed the picture and on the flip side I read some negative things online but nothing that I would call too thought out i.e. no sweat off my bulldog balls. Hence overall my SITGES was a positive one , saw old amigos (too many to name, you know who you are), made new ones, saw one film that I LOVED (Julien Seri’s Night Fare – see it), dealt with one sucker-punch burst of negative energy in a surprisingly admirable fashion (I impressed myself… God bless this new maturity), appreciated all of the fans who came to see me (signed some Shelter and even Dead Shadows stuff) and that supported me and left Sitges to hit Barcelona with a smile on my face.
I am now talking with varied distributors who are interested in putting out THE SHELTER, say prayers, knock on wood, do whatever you do – send that positive energy our way! In closing: big thank you to the Sitges Film Festival and specifically to the great Mike Hostench for having me and making my stay there yet another memorable one. See you with the next film!
Hey all! So executive producer Berge Garabedian and I are back from THE SHELTER world premiere at FILM4 FRIGHTFEST in London England. I’m a bit sick, jet lagged and I probably gained 5 pounds by way of all them pints of Trooper Ale I guzzled (back in the Gym tomorrow), but I am happy!
The screening went well from my POV. Granted not everybody will like what you create, especially when it’s something that is in some ways “non-traditional” like The Shelter, and that is fine. On that, I found it very rewarding to hear from the people who did esteem it, those who were moved by it and got something out of it. That has been my favorite part of this process thus far. Moreover, the reviews that came out of the Fest (below) were positive for the most part. I’m anticipating more reviews/interviews to surface in the following week. I’ll of course keep you all in the loop!
In closing, I want to say a big thank you to the Film4 Frightfest team ( Alan Jones, Greg Day, Ian Rattray, Paul McEvoy) for having us and the film. We had lots of fun and I was happy to learn first hand WHY Frightfest is considered to be one of the best genre Film Festivals in the world! And of course a huge thank you to the people who showed up at the screening! I also saw old friends on this trip and made many new ones. In short, I’m feeling blessed like a mothertrucker today! – All love baby! All love.
You can expect more THE SHELTER news shortly. I am hoping that the Frightfest showing will act as the beginning of a new chapter for the movie. This has been and still is a long and hard f*cking road. I’m learning a lot as I forge forward (like just how much longer of a journey getting an Indie film from point A to point Z truly is). All good though. Onward and forward!

Things are finally starting to inch forward with my directional debut THE SHELTER. That’s actually one thing that I learned for myself recently; even if things are moving forward at a sedated snail’s pace, they are STILL moving forward, hence should be recognized as progress. For the last 6 months I wasn’t thinking that way. I was getting somewhat frustrated by the lack of results in light of my constant non-stop, daily efforts. But I get it now – inch, by inch – that’s how it’s going down – must crank perseverance dial to “through the roof”. 10-4! Roger that!

I’m really happy to share with you all that my directorial debut THE SHELTER will screen at the Film4 FrightFest Festival (August 27th – 31st) aka London Frightfest Film Festival 2015 . Exact date and time are still to be determined. Yeehaw! Man I needed that!
Since the film finished with its Post Production in late 2014 all I’ve been doing is pushing, taking the hits and posing action after action after action… so yeah… when you FINALLY get the reaction you’re seeking – you gotta relish it for a second or two before jumping back in the ring to fight yet another round. So, this is me relishing 🙂
Frightfest is actually a Film Festival (ran by some great dudes, shout out to Alan Jones, Ian Rattray, Paul McEvoy and Greg Day) that I’ve wanted to check out for a very long time now but that I never got around to. And right now I’m happy that I didn’t as I’m glad that I get to attend the Fest as a filmmaker.
I want to say a big thank you to Frightfest for having me and the film! You’ve genuinely made my day. Expect more The Shelter good news to come soon!

The release of this trailer feels like yet another reached echelon for me personally and for the film itself which is getting closer and closer to its Cannes screening. I knew that THE SHELTER would be a battle and a huge part of my life once I took it on – but hey, you don’t REALLY KNOW until you actually go through it and find out first had. To say this film has been a fight would be an understatement and I am very much aware that I’m not close to being done. A huge thank you to my friends, peers and family who have been supporting me throughout this journey. I couldn’t do it without you all. All right, internal monologue done!
THE SHELTER stars Michael Paré, Gayle James, Rachel Whittle and Amy Wickenheiser. It is represented by DC MEDIAS in terms of sales. The film was executive produced by Bruise Productions and JoBlo Movie Productions. Holbrook Multi Media completed both production and post production elements. The film was produced by Donny Broussard and John Fallon.
The film is about: On a star filled night, widower and homeless man Thomas (Michael Paré) finds shelter for the night when he falls upon a vast two story house with the lights on and an inviting open front door. He strolls on in thinking he just caught a lucky break and for a while, it would appear as though he did. Inside, with nobody in sight, he finds all of the comforts that he used to have. After taking a bath, feasting wholeheartedly on some food and relishing the silliness on the tube, he gets some well-earned shut eye. All is well until a restless Thomas wakes up in a panic and finds a loaded revolver resting on his lap. Baffled, he picks up the weapon, checks the barrel and notes that it is fully loaded. A visceral sense of unease invades him immediately. Something is very wrong and he decides that it is time to leave. Alas he finds out swiftly that the premises won’t let him depart so quickly. The doors are all locked, and the windows puzzlingly cannot be opened or broken. Destiny has brought Thomas to this place. Will he survive the ordeal?
David Cholewa’s Dead Shadows will screen at the upcoming UTOPIALES FILM FESTIVAL in Nantes, France on Saturday November 10 at 9PM (ideal time, not too late, not too early). Dead Shadows tells the terrifying story of a young man, named Chris (Wolfrom), whose parents were brutally killed 11 years ago, on the same day that Halley’s comet could be seen from earth. Tonight, a new comet is appearing and everyone in his building are getting ready for a party to celebrate the event. There’s even an apocalypse theory going around. As the night falls, Chris discovers that people are starting to act strange – and it seems to somehow be connected to the comet. They are becoming disoriented and violent and it doesn’t take long before they begin to mutate into something far beyond this world. In a fight for survival, Chris tries to escape from his building with the help of a gun taunting tenant named John (Fallon) – but will they make it out alive?

Gonzalo Lopez’ OLD NUMBER 7(see trailer here) will probably get its last public screening on the 22nd of January, 2011 at 6 PM via AGG EXTREME FEST (which is supposed to be showing the best shorts of last year… hence it’s flattering). The screening will go down at the C. C. Garcilaso in Barcelona, Spain. OLD NUMBER 7 stars myself, Saida Lamas and Sergio Bernal. It was written by Gonzalo Lopez and myself. The flick was produced by Sweet Water Pictures, Aved Productions and yes, moi.
