I’ll speak for myself here; with its long takes/classical directing style and old school cinematography (by the great Ken Kelsch); ERIC RED’s 100 FEETstarring Famke Janssen, Ed Westwick, Bobby Cannavale and yours truly as Jimmy was always meant to be a big screen experience. Alas, the movie was finished when the film market collapsed and distribution as we knew it went tits up, hence it wound up straight to TV then DVD.
On that I am elated to report that Writer/Director and my compadre ERIC RED will be hosting a double bill 35MM screening of 100 FEET (and his classic BODY PARTS) at Alamo Drafthouse in Denver, Colorado on Thursday October 27th 2016 (GET THE INFO AND TICKETS HERE)! So many of you will get the opportunity to witness it on the big screen, the way it was meant to be seen in the first place.
I look back at 100 FEET with much fondness as it was a first for me on many levels.
1- I played against type (nervous/insecure tech dude)
2- Finally got to be in an Eric Red film, which was along term goal of mine.
3- I acted alongside two acting powerhouses (Janssen and Cannavale). My cherry got popped!
4- I had to deliver an “exposition laced” quasi monologue (I basically set up the rules of the movie) and make it sound “organic”. Never had to that before (or since). To this day I remember my lines 🙂
5- Learned so much watching Eric Red at work. I’m a better director today for it.
It was also on that set that I met Michael Pare (who wound up being the lead in my directorial debut The Shelter), visited Eastern Europe for the first time (the flick was shot in Budapest) and also learned the hard way that downing a Coca Cola is not the best thing to do right before acting in a scene (duh) being that one needs to be relaxed to act, Coke did not “relax” me…lol!

Hey all! ESCAPE FROM THE DARK DIMENSIONS (a screenplay that I had the pleasure of working on as co-writer and a film I’m slated to act in – it’s in the same vein as BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA btw) is being shopped around at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. Writer/Director David Cholewa (who’s prior feature DEAD SHADOWS was distributed in over 25 territories and screened at the Sitges Film Festival) and Producer Sidney Chiu will be on hand pushing the project. They are presently in the process of attaching name talent to the film. Check out the synopsis and one-sheet below! I had lots of fun with this one, it’s a crazy ride! Kill it boys!!
“When best friends Gabe and John meet up at a local bar to discuss plans for Gabe’s upcoming bachelor party, they never expected to get caught in a battle between good and evil. After running for their lives to escape the clutches of a psychotic vigilante cop named Largo, with a serious axe to grind, along with his furious henchmen, they seek refuge in a decrepit old community center where an unspeakable act has occurred. The brilliantly deranged mathematician and master of the kabbalah, Rabbi Sandoval, has perfected a formula to open a portal which will destroy creation itself. All the Rabbi needs is one more sacrifice to complete his evil scheme. Now, Gabe and John are forced to make common cause with Largo, and two of the building original inhabitants, an old blind man, Isaac, who is more than he seems, and his young daughter Tsofia , to fight their way up through the floors, each of which is protected by a supernatural guardian more terrifying than the last, and somehow prevent Sandoval from finishing the ritual and opening the seventh portal. It’s great to see Pare shine again, he really gives a powerful performance, one that is broken and jaded, yet damaged and full of pain in ways that we as a viewers seek to put together.”

“We had a fairly smooth shoot. But post-production proved to be very challenging. A lot of weird technical things kept happening, which slowed down the film’s progress considerably. It got to the point that we all started to think that we were messing with things that we’re not supposed to be messing with. I can almost write a book about the very strange things that happened around The Shelter; mostly during the writing and post-production stages.”
I have been hustling hard for this film (which I now affectionately call: “My Vietnam”) non stop for a bit now – on that, I am starting to see the light i.e. looks like the constant effort is starting to pay off. More news soon!

Filmmaking is a team sport…period. Everybody from craft, PA, makeup, crew, cast etc. makes the film happen. So it was very important for me to lock a screening of THE SHELTER in Lafayette Louisiana (where we shot the picture), so that the people who worked on the movie would have the opportunity to see it on the big screen.
Good news is – it is FINALLY locked in stone. THE SHELTER will screen in Lafayette, LA between November 19 and 22nd 2015 at the SOUTHERN SCREEN FILM FESTIVAL. I of course invite everybody that hustled on the film to attend. Will I be there? I want to be, I am not 100% sure yet, I will know in about two weeks. But if I am, I’ll try to bring star Michael Pare with me! So there you have it! WOOT!
I was recently interviewed by the famous fan site AIN’T IT COOL NEWS aka AICN. We talked THE SHELTER…what else?! All I got these days 🙂 Here is an excerpt:
CO: Was there anything else that changed between the script and what was shot?
JF: The religious imagery. There was a statue of Christ and I do little ‘push ins’ on it. When I walked into the house location, the man who owned it was a hardcore Christian and it was filled with religious imagery everywhere. Everywhere. EVERYWHERE. It was a shrine to Christ. And I was like, okay, we’re in the right house.
THE SHELTER will be screening at the SITGES FILM FESTIVAL on October 9th at 8:00PM at the Retiro as part of the Panorama Fantastic section! Writer/Director John Fallon will be on hand to present the screening.
Building up to THE SHELTER Sitges Screening, lots of Shelter related goodies have been popping up online. First we had new reviews by Horrornews.net and This is Horror. Here are excerpts.
Horrornews.net: “It reminded me a lot of the films of David Lynch and Roman Polanski and is just a very strong, intelligent character-driven piece that is sure to satisfy viewers. Pare does an excellent job bringing him (his character) to life. And that’s it for now! On my end, I am now prepping for Spain as it’s around the corner (October 9 baby), we’re trying to lock distribution for the film, am submitting the flick to more Festivals and at the same I am hustling to get my next film off the ground. Hey all! So executive producer Berge Garabedian and I are back from THE SHELTER world premiere at FILM4 FRIGHTFEST in London England. I’m a bit sick, jet lagged and I probably gained 5 pounds by way of all them pints of Trooper Ale I guzzled (back in the Gym tomorrow), but I am happy!
The screening went well from my POV. Granted not everybody will like what you create, especially when it’s something that is in some ways “non-traditional” like The Shelter, and that is fine. On that, I found it very rewarding to hear from the people who did esteem it, those who were moved by it and got something out of it. That has been my favorite part of this process thus far. Moreover, the reviews that came out of the Fest (below) were positive for the most part. I’m anticipating more reviews/interviews to surface in the following week. I’ll of course keep you all in the loop!
In closing, I want to say a big thank you to the Film4 Frightfest team ( Alan Jones, Greg Day, Ian Rattray, Paul McEvoy) for having us and the film. We had lots of fun and I was happy to learn first hand WHY Frightfest is considered to be one of the best genre Film Festivals in the world! And of course a huge thank you to the people who showed up at the screening! I also saw old friends on this trip and made many new ones. In short, I’m feeling blessed like a mothertrucker today! – All love baby! All love.
You can expect more THE SHELTER news shortly. I am hoping that the Frightfest showing will act as the beginning of a new chapter for the movie. This has been and still is a long and hard f*cking road. I’m learning a lot as I forge forward (like just how much longer of a journey getting an Indie film from point A to point Z truly is). There were times the film reminded me of the works of David Lynch, Dario Argento, and even the legendary Alfred Hitchcock. This is perhaps the highest compliment I can pay to Mr. Fallon. You’ve been a critic, screenwriter, actor…was directing always something that you wanted to do?
Directing has always been my Holy Grail, if you will. I started off going to film school, and after film school I went to theatre school for three years and then graduated from that, and then entered the business mostly as an actor and as a script doctor fixing other people’s scripts. Directing was always something that I wanted to do but life goes the way it goes, and when The Shelter came about I knew that was going to be the one. I would fulfill my Holy Grail. I had other scripts that I wrote that I came close to directing, and other people wound up directing them, but The Shelter was so personal and weird and had so much to do with my own individual spirituality that I knew that there was no way somebody else could direct it but me!
