Icons of Fright reviews The Shelter & a recent interview!

The fine folks at ICONS OF FRIGHT (thanks for the support guys, much appreciated) just took a look at THE SHELTER. You can read an excerpt below and check out the entire review HERE.

“THE SHELTER is most definitely the smart man’s horror film, putting more effort into giving its viewers a character study of a man, lost and broken and forced to face and overcome the past mistakes that caused his life to spiral out of control. It’s great to see Pare shine again, he really gives a powerful performance, one that is broken and jaded, yet damaged and full of pain in ways that we as a viewers seek to put together.”

“We had a fairly smooth shoot. But post-production proved to be very challenging. A lot of weird technical things kept happening, which slowed down the film’s progress considerably. It got to the point that we all started to think that we were messing with things that we’re not supposed to be messing with. I can almost write a book about the very strange things that happened around The Shelter; mostly during the writing and post-production stages.”

New The Shelter review, audio interview and more!

Building up to THE SHELTER Sitges Screening, lots of Shelter related goodies have been popping up online. First we had new reviews by Horrornews.net and This is Horror. Here are excerpts.

Horrornews.net: “It reminded me a lot of the films of David Lynch and Roman Polanski and is just a very strong, intelligent character-driven piece that is sure to satisfy viewers. Pare does an excellent job bringing him (his character) to life. As a matter of fact I really couldn’t see anyone else playing the part as well as Pare did and he really shows just how talented of an actor he truly is with this performance.” –  You can read the whole review here!

This is Horror: “The Shelter is pretty much a one man vehicle for Michael Pare who is never anything but captivating as he owns the screen. It’s not easy to hold an audience’s attention for an entire movie, but the combinations of Pare’s experience as an actor and Fallon’s energy, vision and storytelling style  is both entrancing and intoxicating. And that’s it for now! On my end, I am now prepping for Spain as it’s around the corner (October 9 baby), we’re trying to lock distribution for the film, am submitting the flick to more Festivals and at the same I am hustling to get my next film off the ground. “John Fallon certainly has an interesting style of direction.  He gets the most out of his actors certainly, which is an amazing skill for any director to have.  But on top of that, you can clearly see how much he loves the genre as his influences show up on screen. There were times the film reminded me of the works of David Lynch, Dario Argento, and even the legendary Alfred Hitchcock.  This is perhaps the highest compliment I can pay to Mr. Fallon.  His work is evocative of such luminous names in the industry yet this is undoubtedly his own film.  It’s quite frankly a horrifically beautiful sight to behold.”

The Shelter Film4 FrightFest screening date/time and first review of the film by AICN!

Things are finally starting to inch forward with my directional debut THE SHELTER. That’s actually one thing that I learned for myself recently; even if things are moving forward at a sedated snail’s pace, they are STILL moving forward, hence should be recognized as progress. For the last 6 months I wasn’t thinking that way. I was getting somewhat frustrated by the lack of results in light of my constant non-stop, daily efforts. But I get it now – inch, by inch – that’s how it’s going down –  must crank perseverance dial to “through the roof”. 10-4! Roger that!

So as mentioned here, THE SHELTER will premiere at FILM4 FRIGHTFEST and now we have the date and time of said screening Friday August at 8:40PM. See the FrightFest SHELTER PAGE HERE! Hope to see you there! I’m planning to bring some Shelter schwag to give away at the screening.

And while we’re talking good news, famous film site AINT IT COOL NEWS aka AICN reviewed the film (fairly at that) last Friday. I’m not gonna BS y’all, I was beaming after that review! That jolt of positive energy was much welcome.  Here’s an excerpt!

“Writer/director John Fallon conveys this theme of loss and regret clearly and expertly. Sure, that makes for the exact opposite of the feel good movie of the year, but it does make for a pretty fantastic character study of a man who has crumbled to almost nothing.Pare really gives it his all here, plunging to emotional depths I never thought he was able to do and doing them with a real sense of soul. Pare still has the rugged good looks that made him a star in the Eighties, but it feels like, at least in the character he plays here, he really does understand what it is like to have it all and lose it.”

American Muscle reviews!

With Ravi Dhar’s AMERICAN MUSCLE now out on disk reviews are hitting the web. Some good, some bad, some downright offended by the film (which always makes me smile, good, get offended, this overtly PC world bores me)! Here are some of them! AMERICAN MUSCLE stars Nick Principe, Todd Farmer, Robin Sydney, George P. Wilbur, Jennifer Wenger, Trent Haaga and my sorry ass.  It was produced by Snowfort Pictures and Automatic Entertainment. It was directed/shot by  Ravi Dhar and written by yours truly.

Twitch: “Smashing, bloody, rude, and often nude, American Muscle captures the rowdy spirit of 70s exploitation movies and transfers it wholesale to the present day, while also instilling a dose of rueful, personal nostalgia. Make no mistake, American Muscle is first and foremost a movie about an incredibly uber-macho, extremely violent criminal — c’mon, he’s named John Falcon! — and the blood he sheds without remorse in his quest for vengeance.”- read the whole review here!

Supermarcey.com: “There is something emotionally hard hitting, in a film filled with serviceable violence and frantic fucking, about a story of a man who is “living with a memory” who finds himself unable to deal with the way things really are. It won’t be everyone’s bag of tea, but if you watch a movie like this it’s because you want what this film definitely delivers, and it does an admirable job in offering up something a bit more in my opinion. ” –read the whole review here!

Moviemet: “This is a film that delves head first into male fantasy and never bothers to come up for air.  Within minutes of the film starting, Falcon gets out of jail and starts hitchhiking, only to be picked up by a nice-looking lady. FALLON NOTE: I was actually inspired by the Bond movie Octopussy in terms of that angle. All Bond had to do was “show up” and boom women wanted him or/and he’d get laid. I thought it would be funny to do that with our hero Falcon. Alas, not many people got the joke and took it seriously.

After Movie Diner: “You can tell when a film is trying too hard because it keeps winking at the audience to get validation that everything they are doing, while gross, is all fine and in the spirit of the thing, whereas American Muscle doesn’t bother with that for one second. It simply doesn’t give a shit what you think. It sets up its situation and plays it out to its logical, tragic and gruesome conclusion.”-read the whole review here

DVD Verdict: “I understand that screenwriter John Fallon set out to write a very specific kind of movie—one in which the men are tough and the women are sexy and everyone leads a violent life. But because it’s all so calculated, there’s something ugly about it. Every single female character in the movie exists to throw themselves at some man (usually Principe, who beds three of the four women in the movie—two of them immediately upon meeting them) with sex that feels angry towards women. The one major female character in the film is a double-crossing thief, murderer in drug addict who lies around in nearly nothing and has sex with every single person near hear, man or woman. I recognize that these movies aren’t meant to be watched politically, but there’s just something repellent about a movie that’s this misogynist—even a deliberate genre exploitation movie. It reminded me of Larry Bishop’s Hell Ride from a few years ago, a movie that managed to be bad in a lot of the same ways as American Muscle. I can handle a movie that’s ugly and nasty and has a dark worldview, but it’s 2014, guys. Let’s try to do better.” – read the whole review here

FALLON NOTE: Everybody is scum in American Muscle, men and woman. The lead male character is a bigger whore than every woman in the film.  My intent was to write a trashy, smutty and nihilistic flick, that’s it, that’s all.

Cinema Masculin: ” Dès le départ, j’ai voulu aimer le long-métrage, qui s’inspire du cinéma d’exploitation des années 70/80, un genre qui est encore utilisé aujourd’hui par plusieurs réalisateurs comme Quentin Tarantino (Plup Fiction). Étant fan de ce genre, il me faut admettre qu’American Muscle remplit bien son rôle à ce titre. À l’exception de quelques éléments technologiques, le scénario aurait pu situer l’action en 1971 sans problèmes. L’histoire est condensée, avec beaucoup de flashbacks permettant au spectateur de souffler un peu pendant le film, qui durent à peine 75 minutes.”-Read the whole review here

Movie City News:  Too often, revenge movies get caught up in sentimentality, a protagonist’s pursuit of redemption or the sapping of strength that comes with finding love at a most inconvenient time. They sometimes get tripped up, as well, by making the kind of factual mistakes that are caused by cutting corners and distract viewers from the narrative flow. Ravi Dahr’s unrelenting American Muscle wastes no time whatsoever getting to the point and staying there for its entire 90-minute length. The movie opens with a flashback to a violent crime that occurred 10 years earlier, then quickly takes us inside a prison where, presumably, one of the participants is about to be released. As played by veteran hard guy Nick Principe, John Falcon resembles a walking tattoo parlor. His muscular frame attests to a decade spent in the prison yard lifting weights and consuming steroids smuggled into the facility with marijuana, heroin and cellphones by guards and guests. It doesn’t take long to realize that Falcon is a man on a violent mission. After catching a ride with a woman who happily quenches all 10 years’ worth of his sublimated lust, Falcon is asked if he’d like to have her phone number. No, he replies, “I’ll probably be dead in 24 hours.”

Indeed, every hour of the next 24 is spent tracking down his brother, who betrayed him, and the wife he left behind when he was captured and went to prison. Falcon’s also vowed to kill the other gang members who avoided arrest and split up his spoils. He wastes no time doing just that. Writer John Fallon adds several more expository flashbacks and a few scenes in which crank whores are required to go topless, but, again, they don’t impede the forward trajectory of the story or keep Falcon from a final reunion with his brother. I’m usually not overly impressed by revenge pictures, especially those so obviously made on a limited budget.American Muscle managed to hold my interest, however, despite a deluge of wholly gratuitous bloodshed. (Gratuitous nudity is something else entirely.) It helps greatly that Dahr took advantage of the beauty and desolation of the desert near 29 Palms. Nothing says “meth labs” and “psycho-bikers” quite as eloquently as a drive through the giant “wind farms” outside Palm Springs.

YesWeekly: AMERICAN MUSCLE (Well Go USA Entertainment): Director/editor/cinematographer/music supervisor Ravi Dhar’s debut feature is a familiar revenge melodrama that sees ex-con Nick Principe embarking on a 24-hour rampage against those who wronged him, especially brother Todd Farmer. It’s familiar but fast-moving and full of gratuitous nudity and CGI violence. Co-star John Fallon is also scripted. – Read the whole review here

Un gros dur à moustache taciturne qui se prend pour Clint Eastwood (alors qu’il ressemble plutôt à un membre des Village People en tournée) sort de taule après 10 ans d’enfer… Il va se lancer dans une vendetta aussi et sanguinaire que grindhouse… Et accessoirement dans un remake mou du révolutionnaire POINT DE NON RETOUR à John Boorman. Mais version crade et vulgaire… Über vulgaire. Comme si la culture white trash (vivent les gros guns, les gros nichons, les grosses guitares assourdissantes et les grosses doses de crystal meth) se métamorphosait en parangon de subversion!

Et ben… En poussant tous les curseurs de la bienséance au delà des limites de l’entendement humain, l’inconnu Ravi Dhar nous plonge dans le nawak létal… AMERICAN MUSCLE est une divine agonie Z… Un torrent, à la fois décérébré et romantique, de nichons fatigués, de tatouages délirants, de gunfights vénères, de fratricides trisomiques et d’amour impossible… Comme une version sous crack de Tarantino (coucou KILL BILL 2). Et Ravi Dhar filme cette folie avec une sérieux et un minimalisme enthousiasmant. Résultat, on s’attache à ce héros vengeur et à ses aventures sanguinolentes… Il pleut du sang, des neurones et du liquide séminal à s’en remplir les poumons… Un putain de plaisir coupable. Ça c’est de la série B, bien plus noire qu’elle en a l’air, qui envoie les bichons! Et vive l’amour… Ça fait faire que des conneries! Notamment des séries z dérérébrées…

New American Muscle trailer and first review!

Distributors WellGoUSA have unleashed a new and “safer” trailer for AMERICAN MUSCLE (order the Blu-Ray here) and you can see it below! A first review also surfaced at Filmstarts; it’s in German; here are a couple of choice quotes, roughly translated:

“Here heads are not just blown away, but also have their tongues bitten out and then trampled flat with coarse boots. This is already so over-the-top that one “American Muscle” can not really be taken seriously. But the special pleasure is that it is told nevertheless seriously.”

“Committed to the spirit of the old B-movies is writer and actor John Fallon (“Death Race”), who tackled the greatest difficulty in conceiving a sleek story structure with an absolute maximum of Sex and Violence.”

New Deaden review from Dark Fest!

Director Christian Viel and I saw it coming when we made the film 5 years or so ago. Good old DEADEN = the flick that keeps on trucking! Personally, its lasting power sooooo inspires me to get another action project going a-fucking-sap (I am working on it) 🙂 With that, a new review just surfaced out of the Deaden Dark Fest screening, read an excerpt below and the whole she-bang HERE!

The first eight minutes of Deaden have caused numerous people to walk out of the theatre — most of them women.  Deaden writer John Fallon explained that to the crowd at Dark Fest during a brief talk before the screening of his film, claiming that after the first eight minutes were over, it settles down and becomes a more mellow film, and that he’d appreciate it if everyone would give it a chance.

If I said the first eight minutes were brutally violent, I might be understating it. This is not the feel-good movie of the summer, the sleeper hit, or something to show the kids. What Deaden is, however, is an imaginative take on the revenge film, shot on a shoestring budget over 13 days. It does to the revenge film what Clerks did to the comedy: it proves you don’t need huge financial backing to make your movie work. After the first eight minutes, Deaden does calm down, but perhaps not to the degree of being “mellow.”

Off to go polish the script to my next action film! 🙂

Film Reviews From the Basement tap Deaden aka the little movie that could…


Director Christian Viel and I had a gut feeling that our little vigilante flick DEADEN (2006) would probably become some kind of micro cult classic; and being that we are in 2011 and we still hear about it via peeps e-mailing us to say they dug it and new reviews randomly popping out; I guess we were right. Fellow Canucks at Film Reviews From the Basement recently covered the flick by way of mini reviews and their Podcast. Here’s a preview below; check their review HERE and Podcast HERE.

Jason: Filmmakers who piss and moan about not being able to make a good movie on a low budget need to shut the fuck up and watch Deaden. This is a low, low budget action flick that delivers. It’s got nudity, graphic violence, awesome kills and, for the most part, decent acting. Lead man and screenwriter John Fallon  might not have the hard look of the old-school action star, but he’s got the physical presence and acting chops to do the job. And his script doesn’t let him down. A Good from this Basement Dweller.

Shawn: This movie was fantastic! Sure the budget was smaller and some of the actors weren’t awesome, but that didn’t detract from it being entertaining, violent and full of action. Pull any punches? Fuck no! I can’t believe how far this movie actually went. Good for you Fallon. Fuck Hollywood’s pretentious asses. Too bad the industry hasn’t grown a set of ball and given you what you need to do this kind of thing more often. A Good from me!

Another THE RED HOURS review surfaces online.

Another review just surfaced online for my short film THE RED HOURS (watch it here), read an except below and  the whole thing HERE.

THE RED HOURS is a film which proved to be strangely alluring. The film’s tone is set from the start of the very first frame which gives it’s viewers an insight into shear madness. We are shown Mark, a man who‘s in the bathroom of a rave party looking into a mirror at himself, while at quick glance it seems he‘s just looking at himself, it becomes clear that Mark is doing much more, he is starring into his own soul which is obviously filled with rage and discontent regarding his relationship status with his girlfriend and is un-doubt-able suspicions. From this moment on the line between reality and delusion begins to blur and we are taken to a chaotically horrific setting where Mark is awaken tied to a char while his girlfriend and another woman make out while holding a human heart (or at least that‘s what it looked like to me) from here the story takes a dramatically pulse pounding race for survival leaving the viewer on the edge of their seat wondering how will it all end. Some will argue that this film is an art house piece while others say it’s surrealist piece. I say it’s the type of short film that filmmaker’s Stanley Kubrick and Alfred Hitchcock would have cooked up had they ever worked together
